This amber glass candle dome is made from a reclaimed demijohn, carefully cut and finished by hand in our Dorset workshop. The dome is then paired with a solid hardwood base, creating a centred, weighty piece designed for everyday use. As the glass once served as a vessel for storing and fermenting liquids, it already holds a long history before becoming part of the home. We preserve the natural surface character of the demijohn – soft ripples, subtle tone shifts, and traces of its former purpose – giving each candle dome a presence that feels lived-in and grounded rather than manufactured or uniform.
When placed over a lit pillar candle, the candle dome diffuses the flame into a warm, steady glow. The amber tint deepens this effect, creating a softer, more enveloping light. It works beautifully to transform the mood of a room in the evening: the light becomes lower, gentler, and more restful. It is as suitable for a slow supper with friends as it is for a moment of stillness at the end of the day.
The hardwood base is shaped to support the glass securely while allowing heat to disperse. As wood species may vary according to what is available seasonally and locally, each base also carries its own natural grain and tone. This is an object made to be handled, used and enjoyed – not simply displayed.
