Candle Making Workshop
Come and spend a few hours making candles with us at the Old Green studio in Dorset.
Our candle making workshops take place around the table in our working studio on the edge of the woods. They’re small, relaxed and designed for complete beginners — a chance to learn something new, explore natural scent and leave with two candles you’ve made yourself.
Come with a friend, give the workshop as a gift, or book a place on your own. Many people do.
Make your own natural candles
We’ll start by sharing the foundations of candle making and some of what we’ve learnt through years of making candles at Old Green. You’ll explore natural wax, wicks and burn quality, and understand how the different elements of a candle work together.
Then we’ll move into scent.
Working with a collection of pure essential oils, you’ll smell and explore individual notes before beginning to combine them. We’ll guide you through balancing your blend, but there is no set recipe to follow — the smaller candle you make will be scented entirely by you.
You’ll also pour one of our large Old Green candles, choosing from our collection of seasonal essential oil blends.
By the end of the workshop you’ll have made two natural candles to take home and learnt the process well enough to continue experimenting yourself.
What you’ll take home
- A large Old Green candle in the seasonal scent of your choice
- A smaller candle scented with your own essential oil blend
- A printed candle making guide to use at home
All materials and equipment are included.
A few hours at the Old Green studio
The workshop lasts around two hours, although we leave a little extra time so no one feels rushed.
Groups are intentionally kept small, giving you plenty of opportunity to ask questions, experiment with scent and get individual help as you make.
You don’t need any previous experience and you certainly don’t need to arrive knowing anything about candles. Just come ready to smell a lot of essential oils and make something with your hands.
Coming on your own?
Please do.
We know booking a workshop alone can sometimes feel a little daunting, but many of our guests come by themselves. Everything happens together around one table and the making gives everyone something to get stuck into from the start.
Giving a candle making workshop as a gift
You can book a specific workshop date for someone and ask us for a voucher to give them, or choose a digital gift voucher so they can pick a date that suits them.

We spent a super relaxed morning making scented candles and I can’t recommend it enough. We learned about how scents go together which was very interesting, all in a beautiful environment in a friendly and happy atmosphere with other candle-makers and the super guidance of the lovely Laura. We’ll definitely come again!

A wonderfully informative and engaging candle-making workshop. The session provided a perfect opportunity to explore your sense of smell and tap into your creativity. The workshop itself is held in a charming, welcoming environment, with the added bonus of being able to purchase some of their beautiful products afterward. I especially appreciated their commitment to sustainability, including their innovative up-cycling of glass bottles into candle holders. Their holistic approach, focusing on sourcing local materials and reusing discarded items, highlights their dedication to eco-friendly practices.

We booked the candle making for a hen so, the venue was cosy and smelt amazing, the team couldn’t do enough for us in the run up to the event as well as during. We all walked away with 2 candles each, and everyone was very positive about the event, with some saying they were going to go again with family and friends

Really well organised event, loved the process of learning the first step of essential oil candle making. Loved the atmosphere, venue and lovely group of people attending. And you leave with your own candles to take home. Superb experience, hope to return and can 100% recommend! Thank you.

This is the 3rd time I have done this course and I just love it as a relaxing sensory experience, I took a friend along who had never done anything creative like this before and she also really enjoyed it! It inspires general creativity, the environment is laid back and relaxing and the ethos can be taken home.

My best friend and I had a really lovely time making two gorgeous candles. All of the people teaching us were very knowledgeable, friendly and fun and the location is beautiful. We heard and saw a Nightingale and went for a walk in the woods and bluebells afterwards which was such a treat. Highly recommend it and I intend to go again with other friends in the future.

I came for the first time and decided to make a day of it by attending the diffuser workshop in the morning and the candle workshop in the afternoon. I deliberately chose Old Green as I wanted to work with pure essential oils and not fragrance oils. The whole day was wonderful and relaxing with Ted welcoming us as we arrived. His knowledge and love of the subject is infectious and you come away inspired to make more of your own. The scent from the candles we made permeated the car on my return journey home – blissful!
