Natural Reed Diffuser Making Workshop

Come and spend a few hours exploring natural scent with us at the Old Green studio in Dorset.

Our reed diffuser making workshop is about much more than choosing a fragrance from a shelf. Working with pure essential oils, you’ll explore individual scent notes, discover how natural fragrances are built and create a blend entirely of your own.

Everything happens in a small group around our studio table, with plenty of time to smell, experiment and follow your own nose.

Explore natural scent

We’ll begin with an introduction to essential oils and the foundations of scent blending.

You’ll smell your way through a curated collection of natural oils, exploring the scents you’re naturally drawn to and beginning to understand how different notes work together.

Then you’ll start blending.

There is no set scent to recreate and no right answer. We’ll guide you through balancing and refining your fragrance until you’ve created something that feels completely your own.

Make and finish your reed diffuser

Once you’ve settled on your scent blend, you’ll use it to make a full-size natural reed diffuser to take home, housed in one of our repurposed bottle-glass vessels.

Then it’s over to our collection of dried flowers, grasses and botanicals.

Choose the stems you’re drawn to and arrange your own little dried bouquet to sit amongst the diffuser reeds. Keep things simple and natural or play with shape, height and texture — every finished diffuser leaves the studio looking a little different.

We’ll also talk through the practical side of diffuser making, from ratios and materials to getting the best scent throw, so you leave understanding the process rather than simply following a recipe.

What you’ll take home

    • A full-size natural reed diffuser in a repurposed bottle-glass vessel
    • Your own completely personal essential oil scent blend
    • A hand-arranged dried botanical bouquet for your diffuser
    • The knowledge and recipe you need to recreate your fragrance
    • All essential oils, dried botanicals, materials and equipment are included.

Come and spend a few hours at the studio

Our diffuser making workshops are small, relaxed and suitable for complete beginners.

Come with a friend, bring someone as a gift or book a place on your own. Many of our guests arrive solo and, once everyone is sitting around the table smelling essential oils together, there’s always plenty to talk about.

The workshop lasts around two hours, although we leave a little extra time so there’s no need to rush your scent.

Giving a diffuser making workshop as a gift

A reed diffuser making workshop makes a lovely gift for someone interested in natural scent, interiors or simply learning something new.

You can book a specific workshop date and request a voucher to give them, or choose a digital gift voucher so they can select their own date.

It would have been useful to hear what combinations of diffusers other people had produced and smell at least some of them.
For that number of people there should have been two complete sets of oils, one at each end of the table on rotating discs.

Thank you for taking the time to share this – that’s really helpful feedback. Creating space to smell and discuss a wider range of blends is something we’re actively refining, particularly as group sizes vary, and your suggestion around oil placement is a good one. We’ll take this on board for future sessions.

What a wonderful morning spent making an essential oil room diffuser. So many oils were available for us to try so that we could narrow down the ones we liked. We learnt about top, middle and base notes and the groups that essential oils belonged to. After experimenting with different blends and the guidance of Ted, we all came up with our signature scent for the room we were creating it for. Once blended, this was poured into a glass bottle with stopper. We then selected various dry flowers and reeds to decorate the small glass jar the oil would be poured into at home. I can now say I have an amazing scent filling my hallway as we walk into the house and it’s all natural. Needless to say I now have the bug for creating more. Fabulous course, thank you Ted.
